Spring / Summer Exhibitions Opening Reception at The Reach
Join us on Thursday, May 23rd for the opening reception of our Spring / Summer Exhibitions at The Reach!
UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS
LITTLE MÉXICO
Carlos Colín
23.05.19 - 15.09.19
Little México presents a new body of work by the Mexican-born, Vancouver-based, multi-disciplinary artist Carlos Colín.
Through a series of sculptural installations, screen-prints, sound and video installations, and photographs examining the significance of merging symbols between Latin American art and history and its diaspora in Canada, Colín’s project for The Reach will look closely at the lives and experiences of participants in the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP), which brings thousands of workers from Mexico every year to work on Canadian farms.
Supported by the Canada Council for The Arts and The BC Art Council
SOMETHING MORE THAN NOTHING
Aganetha Dyck, Andrew Norman Wilson, Colleen Heslin, Kelly Mark, Madiha Sikander, and Michael Mandiberg
23.05.19 - 15.09.19
Something More than Nothing brings together a diverse group of artists whose work all deals in some way with notions of hidden or invisible labour: work that is not seen, valued, or adequately paid.
From domestic or care work, to digital and tech labour that is increasingly performed in the home as piece work, to the hidden labour that is inherent in the art world itself, all the works in this exhibition draw attention to labour that, though often ignored, is nevertheless fundamental to the workings of the world. The contemporary artwork in this exhibition is complemented by displays of historical objects from The Reach’s collections, helping to contextualize how our ideas about work and labour have evolved over the years.
PRECIOUS
Karin Jones
23.05.19 - 15.09.19
Karin Jones is a Vancouver-based, multi-disciplinary artist with a background in jewellery and metalwork, whose work examines the ways historical narratives shape our present-day identities.
Her series Precious consists of a group of repurposed farm implements that Jones has embellished with damascene inlay, an age-old technique originally developed for inlaying silver and gold on arms and armour. The work addresses pastoral notions of agricultural labour and the romanticization of rural life.
